Amsterdam has more canal than road in the middle, and four kinds of boat go down it. What separates them is the roof, the drinks and whether anyone is talking.

Van Gogh, the Rijksmuseum and the Anne Frank House all run on slots bought online in advance. Book the hour, then plan the day around it: the museum quarter is fifteen minutes from the centre by tram and the last hour before closing is the quiet one.

Van Gogh, and how far ahead
Two hundred paintings and the letters, hung in the order he painted them. Slots are sold online only and the afternoon ones go first in summer. The last entry of the day is the emptiest.
The Rijksmuseum, done in an hour
The Night Watch hangs at the end of the Gallery of Honour and most people walk straight to it. Come in at nine or after three and you get the Vermeers to yourself.
Moco, the Royal Palace, the Icebar
Banksy and a basement of light rooms at Moco, the marble state rooms on Dam Square, a bar built out of ice. All three sell tickets for the same afternoon, which the big two rarely do.

The Zaan was the first industrial district in Europe and it ran on wind. Hundreds of mills sawed timber, ground pigment and pressed oil along this stretch of river; a handful were moved here and still work. Go inside the sawmill and watch the whole building turn on its cap to face the weather.

Keukenhof and the Bulb Fields
Seven million bulbs go in by hand every autumn for a garden that opens in the middle of March and shuts in the middle of May. The fields around Lisse are the real spectacle and they are cut for the bulb trade as soon as they colour, so the window inside the window is about ten days.
